I’m shocked on how easy it is to DIY a tablecloth. While planning my Christmas table this year I wanted to do my best to spend as little as possible and be a little different than my usual. I looked through all of my table setting stock and nothing was clicking for me. But when I looked through my fabric stash…. I found exactly what I wanted.
Pink and Maroon for Christmas? Yes please!

I found this fabric at Savers probably a year ago and the pattern but didn’t really have any plans for it. The width of the fabric hung over both sides of the table by about three inches on all sides. I could have just cut it and used it as is, but since there was so much fabric to work with, I decided to try doing a cute ruffle all the way around.

Here’s how I did it. I measured the length and width of my table and added three inches to each side to account for the overhang. I took that measurement (for me was 144 inches) and multiplied it by 2 so it would have a nice ruffle and cut a ten-inch-wide piece of fabric. I ended up having to cut two lengths of fabric to get the correct amount of border, but it was very easy to stitch together to make one long piece.

Fold in the bottom of the border a half inch twice to hide the raw edge.
I set the stitch on my machine to the longest setting (was 6 on my Janome) and stitched across the top of the border twice. Doing this twice makes making the ruffle a lot easier to manage. I pulled the thread until the fabric was the same length as the measurement of the diameter of the table.
From there I pinned it on and stitched it together using a normal stitch length. If I had a serger, I would have used it to eliminate the raw edge between the tabletop and the border.
Now my table has a new original tablecloth that took about an hour to make. And since it’s pink and maroon, it can be used pretty much all year round.

Don’t just look for fabric at the secondhand shops, because it doesn’t happen often. Look at the curtains and sheets too! both usually have enough length to make a great tablecloth with minimal adjustments.
Let me know if you love this as much as I do!
